No, I hadn't been drinking.

Coming downstairs after putting the girls to bed last night, my left foot slipped out from under me and I fell hard, I mean f'ing HARD, on my ass, and slid the rest of the way down the stairs. It hurt a lot.

I was wearing tennis socks on bare wood stairs, which is plain stupid, and that hurts too.

I spent the rest of the evening on the couch with an ice pack on my butt. Took off my shorts for fear I wouldn't be able to get them off later due to major swelling. The bruising is substantial. Alarming, even.

Still, I'm glad I didn't hurt my back or break any bones. I'm glad I have pants loose enough to get over my still significantly swollen left butt cheek today.

The first aid book says to apply an ice pack for 20 minutes every 2 hours for the first 48 hours after the injury. Obviously I wasn't setting a timer to get this done overnight, but I'd better get back on it now. Off to the couch with me.

Be careful folks. It's the ordinary things that get ya.

  1. Oh no! You poor thing! We have hardwood stairs too, with ceramic tile in the entry way. It's a recipe for a cracked open head -- or swollen butt cheek -- which is why I'm fanatical about the boys and those stairs. If Rocco's wearing socks, he has to go down on his butt. And Spike isn't (technically) allowed on the steps by himself at all, but that doesn't really stop him from trying. Hope your butt's better soon!

  2. My kids say I never fall, stumble or trip, not exactly true, I have fallen 3 times in my nearly 60 years. 12/4/05--Great Falls Paterson NJ, on way to work-6 AM , stupidly say hey I want to see the falls in sunrise, never having seen them before. Forgeting that the mist freezes on the stairs. Hit that top stair and that was all she wrote, last thought on way down "Go loose, this is gonna hurt"
No breaks-but enough muscle damage to last through a 6 month rehab. 6/6/09 end of long day of yard work, tell wife--be back in 10, gonna walk over and cast a line in lake. Little boat ramp someone put a peice of carpet on it, not realizing the carpet was slick with algae, down I went. Last thought. "I am in trouble", I was cause I knocked myself out, couldn't walk so I had to crawl to a boat to sit, called wife--thank God for cell phone, CAT scan says concussion cracked vert. Thousands of miles a year on bike, hundreds of miles hiked in rough country without a problem. A couple of garden variety walks and near death experiences. I now know the solution lies with the choice of shoe, in each instance they were slick bottomed. All I can think of is the actress and realize we sometimes get lucky. Falls really are the death of many. I know I will never wear gum rubber soles or Nike slides again. BTW, the first fall, roller skates, need I say more.Be well and get some good shoes....
