I'm a very good speller. I don't say this to brag, because it ain't braggin' if it's true, but also because I don't think it's an indication of intelligence or anything except that I happen to be able to do it. It's a knack. Some of the smartest people I know, way smarter than I, can't spell for beans.
But here are some words that just don't come automatically, and always make me pause, if only for a split second.
zucchini
broccoli
occasionally
embarrassed
It's the double letters.
(I know: Most. Boring. Post. Ever.)
Hey! broccoli and embarrassed are my bug-a-boos, also! And I am a champion speller, too - I almost went to the national spelling bee way back when you didn't have to devote your life to spelling in order to be in the competition. "quixotic" is the one that got me - I had never heard the word before (hey - I was only 11).
ReplyDeleteFor me it is absence and a lot. I ALWAYS want to write absense and alot.
ReplyDeleteI was at Liv's school the other day and actually had to look up the word absence in the dictionary while I wrote a note for her teacher in the lounge....
How embarrassing.....(another hard one for me...)
